Week 1: Manhattan
Used Canadian whiskey, Martini red vermouth, Peychaud's bitters, maraschino cherries, and grenadine.
Too much bitters = bad. I thought I would like them but I didn't. I took A.'s excellent sugggestion and tasted each component separately. I like both whiskey and vermouth so it's all about getting the right mix. I was supposed to use Angostura bitters, but the crappy ABC by our house only had the one kind. (Yes, that's Alcohol and Beverage Control store folks - we live in the South!)
This turns out to be my ideal blend (apparently called a 50/50 because of the equal amounts of whiskey and vermouth):
1 oz whiskey
1 oz vermouth
1/2 oz grenadine
1 dash bitters
Garnish - Maraschino cherry
When I can get to the fancy liquor store in the District I'll get maraschino liqueur to try instead of the grenadine - it's a little too sweet but 1/4 oz wasn't enough.
A. preferred the more traditional recipe:
2 oz whiskey
1/2 oz vermouth
2-3 dashes bitters
He also liked his on the rocks.
Apparently, a scotch Manhattan is a Rob Roy.
Next week: Manhattans again, this time for four, with photos.
